ABOUT CELSO FERREIRA

Dr. Celso Ferreira is a Professor in the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Infrastructure Engineering at George Mason University and serves as Associate Dean for Graduate Studies in the Volgenau School of Engineering. He directs the Mason Flood Hazards Research Lab and co-directs the Virginia Climate Center.Dr. Ferreira’s work focuses on advancing flood resilience and climate adaptation through engineering innovation, natural infrastructure solutions, and community-engaged research. His research quantifies flood hazards across coastal, riverine, and urban systems, with particular emphasis on compound flooding and flood adaptation. He collaborates closely with federal, state, and local partners to translate science into actionable tools and policy-relevant guidance.He was a contributing author to the Coastal Effects chapter of the 5th National Climate Assessment (U.S. Global Change Research Program). His research has been supported by NSF, NASA, EPA, NOAA, DOI, DOD, NFWF, and other public and private sponsors. He has authored over 80 peer-reviewed publications.A registered Professional Engineer in Maryland, Dr. Ferreira earned his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering from Texas A&M University, specializing in water resources and coastal engineering. He brings over 18 years of consulting experience in the United States and Brazil, including contributions to the development of the U.S. National Flood Factor with the First Street Foundation. He has also served as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University and as an Associate Researcher with the U.S. Geological Survey.
