Celsa joined The Mentoring Center as the Program Director for an innovative juvenile diversion program that serves as an alternative to detention for youth offenders. She became Executive Director in October 2008.Her responsibilities as Executive Director include:strategic planning and directionfund developmentpolicy development and advocacyprogram and personnel managementFounded in 1991, The Mentoring Center was created to serve as a technical assistance and training provider for Bay Area mentoring programs. The Mentoring Center continues to provide technical assistance and training services, tailored for public and private youth-serving organizations, and has serve more than 800 mentoring programs locally and nationally. At the core of The Mentoring Center’s philosophy is the concept of Transformative Mentoring™, an intensive and long-term process that utilizes a specific set of best practices and attempts to modify the attitudes that give rise to destructive behavior. Transformative Mentoring uses cognitive restructuring to address issues of positive self-identity and is the foundation of all aspects of The Mentoring Center’s work.As a direct service provider, TMC serves between 300-350 adjudicated, detained and other “highly at-risk” youth between the ages of 13-25 annually, through our Transformative Mentoring groups and juvenile justice programs. The Mentoring Center provides service in detention facilities, schools, and community centers.The Mentoring Center is an established voice in the areas of juvenile justice, reentry, youth development, disproportionate minority contact (DMC) and other policies and programs impacting Black men and boys, locally, regionally and nationally. TMC regularly collaborates with other policy leaders and systems partners in the juvenile justice field across California. TMC continues to bring to light the best policy and program practices, informed by the agency’s direct services programs.
