About Cecilia Scimia

I am a Cardiologist and hold a PhD in Molecular Medicine, driven by a profound passion for advancing Medicine and fostering Innovation. My journey began with clinical training in Cardiology in Italy, followed by a transition to the United States to pursue scientific research. Initially, I honed my skills at UCSD and the Sanford-Burnham Institute for Medical Research in San Diego, where my focus centered on unraveling the mechanisms underlying heart failure.Subsequently, I relocated to Philadelphia to embark on a Physician-Scientist career at Temple University. During my tenure at Temple, my interests evolved towards integrating Innovation and Entrepreneurship with Medicine and Science. This led me to pursue a Master\'s Degree in Management, Innovation, and Entrepreneurship at the Fox School of Business, where I also founded a company based on a cardiac medical device that I first conceptualized. In August 2015, I transitioned from academia to assume the role of Medical Science Liaison in Medical Affairs at Takeda Pharmaceuticals. Initially focused on Obesity (Contrave), I later transitioned to the Immunology/GI therapeutic area (Entyvio). Within Takeda, I moved to Clinical Development, serving as an Associate Medical Director in the GI therapeutic area, primarily focusing on developing molecules for diseases such as gastroparesis, vomiting, and pancreatitis. In December 2019, I ventured into the biotech sector, joining Rhythm Pharmaceuticals and dedicating myself to develop Setmelanotide for genetic causes of obesity as a Medical Director. Since 2021, Rhythm has provided me with the opportunity to spearhead the development of setmelanotide for another rare disease indication, hypothalamic obesity. I have been deeply involved since the design of the Phase 2 taking it to an ongoing Pivotal study. Over time, my responsibilities have expanded, and I currently serve as the Medical Lead for several studies all focused on addressing hypothalamic obesity.
