About Lei Wang

My passion working with people and need to put my organizing skills to use are met in the clinical, teaching, and research world of counseling psychology. I am currently employed as an Assistant Professor at Chatham University\'s Graduate Psychology Program. In terms of clinical work, I have experience working with individuals, couples, and groups in several different settings. Such settings include career centers, department clinic, university counseling center, and community college. I am a proponent for multiculturalism and social justice, in which I strive to be an advocate for clients and the community. I have provided bilingual counseling services in English and Mandarin Chinese. In addition, I received the Practicum Student of the Year award at the end of my first year in the doctoral program and was interviewed by Indiana Daily Student for helping to setup Mandarin services at our department clinic, Center for Human Growth. At Chatham University, I have taught a variety of courses, including Foundations of Counseling Psychology, Psychology of Culture and Identity, Group Counseling, Practicum, Advanced Multicultural and Diversity Issues in Counseling Psychology, and Supervision and Leadership. My two primary research interests are:(1) Asian international and Asian American mental health and (2) counseling training and clinical work. Specifically, in terms of mental health among Asian international and Asian American college students, I focus on cultural adjustment, perceived discrimination, career, and mental health outcomes. Within the area of counseling training and clinical work, I focus on cross-cultural training, language-specific counseling and intervention, and supervision.

Experience

  1. Assistant Professor

    Chatham University

Aug 2019 — Present · Pittsburgh, PA, US

The Graduate Psychology Programs at Chatham University includes an APA-Accredited Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D.) in Counseling Psychology, a MPCAC-Accredited Master’s of Science in Counseling Psychology (MSCP), and a Master\'s of Arts in Psychology (MAP). Through this role, I teach courses at the doctoral and master\'s level, including Advanced Multicultural and Diversity Issues in Counseling Psychology; Supervision and Leadership; Psychology of Culture and Identity; Foundations of Counseling Psychology; Group Counseling; Practicum and Internship. I take a developmental and collaborative approach by meeting students where they are and empowering students to take initiative of their own learning. I use this same approach when it comes to advising and mentoring students. Here are some ways that my advisees have described my mentoring style:\"As an advisor, I think Lei has a collaborative approach. She gives you the space to share what you need and where you’re at before exploring helpful solutions or routes to take. She is very organized, which keeps us both on track and on the same page about next steps.\"\"Working with Dr. Lei as my advisor has been a great experience. Dr. Lei allows students to take leadership and ownership in their work while providing support and guidance both on a professional and personal level.\" I co-direct the IDEALS lab with my colleague, Dr. Michael Cadaret, in which we host research projects that centers on diversity and social justice. Students and I have two accepted papers in peer-reviewed journals and one published book chapter. I am currently in the Technology Fellowship program (20••••23), which has been an enriching experience. As part of the fellowship, I have been able to experiment with implementing more technology use in my classes, such as creating a supervision role-play assignment using VoiceThread, generate discussion boards via Padlet, introduction videos with Flipgrid, etc.
