About Danae Askar

Danae Askar is a national security and human rights professional with a deep bench of non-governmental and U.S. government experience. She is currently a Research Scholar at NYU Law and Legal Editor for Just Security.She is a former Attorney-Adviser for the State Department\'s Office of the Legal Adviser, which advises the United States government on all legal issues arising in connection with U.S. foreign policy, participates in U.S. delegations to international negotiations, and represents the United States before international courts and tribunals.Danae has experience in peace negotiations, human rights, international criminal law, and the laws of war. As Counsel for a pro bono global law firm, she advised the Intra-Syrian Peace Process and Astana ceasefire negotiations, the Yemeni peace process, civil society documenters on issues relating to human rights investigations and international criminal prosecutions, and on topics relating to victim representation in hybrid war crimes courts. Her fieldwork experience includes Turkey/Southeast Turkey, Jordan, Rwanda, and South Africa. In 2016 she completed a Juris Doctor at Harvard Law School with a clinical emphasis in international human rights law in conflict contexts, and further specialization in the laws of war and complex negotiations. In 2013 she completed a Masters of Science in Comparative Politics at the London School of Economics, with specialized coursework in Nationalism and Ethnic Politics and Conflict. Distinction-awarded dissertation centered on political Islam, nationalism and women\'s rights in Iran, with cross-case comparison to Turkey. She completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Modern Standard Arabic at the LSE with distinction.Bar Admission Status: Licensed to practice in New York and the District of Columbia
