ABOUT CATHY RUSSELL
I lead placemaking projects and research across Ryder and am passionate about shaping healthy, sustainable places which enhance wellbeing and strengthen communities through participatory design. From regional and city scale, to neighbourhoods, streets and urban acupuncture, I work across a range of sectors, contexts and locations to prepare visions, strategies, masterplans, development frameworks, implementation plans and support business cases. I collaborate with specialists in sustainability, engagement and economics to inform a place-based approach. I am particularly interested in evidence-based design through engagement and harnessing data on demographics, assets and public health. My thought leadership includes themes such as healthy placemaking, active travel, green infrastructure, net zero town centres and urban design for mental health, having presented at the International Healthy City Design Congress. I am a member of the Urban Design Group, Recognised Practitioner in Urban Design, associate of the RTPI, Building with Nature Approved Assessor and a Healthy Streets Designer.
