LandscapeU puts forward a model of graduate training at The Pennsylvania State University to help reinvent the land grant mission, beyond agriculture, to enhance its relevancy for FEW challenges in the 21st Century. The program focuses on (1) transdisciplinary competencies for graduate education, linking university training to actionable science experience;(2) regenerative solutions that create sustainability through redesign and renewal, integrating both pattern and process;(3) ecological design and planning, an approach that weaves together an understanding of the long timescales of human impacts on landscapes with considerations about cultural resources, environmental justice, and social equity; and,(4) a focus on landscapes as the unit of analysis for linking tele-connected FEW systems across scales. LandscapeU will train the next generation of scholar-practitioners to deftly cross disciplinary boundaries and work in partnership with stakeholders to co-create and co-produce solutions.
