About Catherine Abalos

My need for variation started young when I strived for the honor roll every semester and dedicated years to extracurricular activities (student council, dance, theater, and chorus). Still today, I enjoy the challenge of balancing unlike projects to satisfy both sides of my brain: by day, I solve clients’ problems and manage a team of sixteen; by night, I hone my craft as a writer of personal essay. My career began in marketing at a California lifestyle magazine in Los Angeles where I produced events, managed projects for the advertising sales team, and directed the internship program. When I moved back to the Bay Area, I continued to work in marketing and found a knack for operations as I managed the city’s premier barre fitness studio, creating systems and an administrative training program for the back-of-house. Outside the office, I serve as class rep for my high school’s alumni association (I helped plan our class’s 5-year and 10-year reunions) as well as an alumni advisor to my sorority’s USF chapter (acting as a mentor to current collegiate officers). In December 2018, I completed my MFA in Writing at the University of San Francisco and received the Graduate Student Leadership Award for my tenure both as nonfiction editor of our literary journal Switchback and as president of the Graduate Writers Association. Since 2016, I’m also a member of my library’s book club, which consists mostly of retirees who put my annual goal of reading 20 books to shame.I enjoy talking to anyone who’s ready for a conversation, creating systems where they’re needed, and fine-tuning copy until every word sings.
