ABOUT CATHERINE TAKATA-TONINI

Cat is a passionate advocate for community-driven, science-based approaches to marine and ocean conservation. She is deeply interested in how people connect with the marine environment—and how those connections can create lasting, collaborative solutions. Her professional journey has been shaped by a commitment to bringing diverse voices together to address complex marine challenges through inclusive strategies and policies. With experience spanning NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries to the National Ocean Protection Coalition, Cat has worked at the intersection of research, advocacy, and community engagement. She has supported coastal restoration with Mālama Maunalua, contributed to oceanographic research at UC Santa Cruz, and developed youth education programs through the Ocean Institute and the Orange County Science and Engineering Fair. Throughout, her focus remains on connecting science and people to support diverse, sustainable ocean communities. She holds a Master of Environmental Science and Management from the Bren School of Environmental Science & Management at UC Santa Barbara and a Bachelor of Science in Earth Science from UC Santa Cruz. She values interdisciplinary collaboration and believes that the most effective conservation solutions emerge when scientists, community members, and decision-makers work together. Outside of work, she enjoys the beach, paddling, snorkeling, and enjoying the outdoors with her friends and family.
