ABOUT CATHERINE KATE JERE

I am an expert in education and international development, working across research, monitoring and evaluation, practice and teaching. With 20 years experience of leading collaborative research projects within Southern Africa and training educators in Malawi, and expertise in global policy analysis and dissemination, my focus has been on addressing inequalities and exclusion in educational access and achievement, especially in relation to gender inequalities. I am an Associate Professor at the University of East Anglia, teaching undergraduate and postgraduate courses exploring education and its role in development, as well as gender, diversity and social development. I am Course Director for UEA\'s MA in Education and Development and Masters programme in Social Science Research, and supervise several PhD students. I have published articles, technical reports and blogs addressing gender and schooling – including school-based gender violence - alternative modes of education provision, youth skills development and service, and educational responses to HIV/AIDS. I have been a researcher with UNESCO\'s flagship Global Education Monitoring Report and have expertise in developing policy-related writing. I am competent in both quantitative and qualitative research methods and analysis, and keen to promote high-quality, mixed-methods, participatory and transformative research designs. As Co-Chair of the UEA UNESCO Chair programme for Adult Literacy and Learning for Social Transformation, I have participated in a range of research and training activities, including as member of the coordinating team for a GCRF-funded programme of research exploring family literacy and indigenous knowledge in partnership with higher education institutions in Malawi, Nepal, Ethiopia and the Philippines. I regularly offer expertise in research design and analysis for the FCDO Girls Education Challenge programme.I am an Advisor for the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission and an Associate of the National Foundation for Educational Research in the UK (NFER), as well as a Board Trustee for the Mamie Martin Fund, supporting scholarships for girls\' education in Malawi.
