ABOUT CATALINA TAN

10••••••••00… is an exact representation of how my eyesight progressed throughout the years. As my glasses grew thicker and heavier for every page I read, the lenses I use to view the world have allowed me to broaden my perspective and enrich my knowledge in everything I do. This journey all started from my dad’s storytelling nights, where he would read the most interesting picture books like The Rainbow Fish and The Very Hungry Caterpillar to me (well, it was intriguing to me at least, my dad may have been trying his best to keep himself awake during the entire process). As I grew older, I started to apply the active skills I have gained from reading – retaining and processing information then acting towards it – while building Legos and playing the piano. In both activities, reading has allowed me to maintain precision and identify errors (as well as finding ways to solve them). After continuing to practice and sharpen these skills, I have not only employed this expertise while mentoring children in constructing scientific kits but also while building my own projects at university, where I combine technology and knowledge to build medical devices like the PPG, designed to improve human health – with one condition: I had to use my glasses.
