About Carson S. Kay
As a critical, engaged scholar of human communication and American culture, my research examines the representation of political/politicized identities in contentious U.S. spaces and conversations through rhetorical and qualitative methodologies. I question how and why civic disengagement occurs, what and how stories and social discourses contribute to citizen decisions to (dis)engage in political conversations, and how dialogic and deliberative communication can reinvigorate public interest in political discourse. As an educator, I foster equitable and deliberative democratic practices in my classrooms to encourage the development of critical thinking, active learning, and self-reflexive awareness. With over a decade of competitive public speaking expertise, I teach my students how to use their voices to motivate social engagement and enact positive change in the world. Moreover, I draw upon my own interdisciplinary background to underscore the importance of communication across majors and career paths. Through engaged pedagogy in flipped and online classroom spaces, I seek to co-create transformative moments with my students and provide opportunities for meaningful collaboration.
