About Carrie Walling
I am the Executive Director of the Human Rights Program at the University of Minnesota - the hub of interdisciplinary research, teaching, and programming on human rights. We prepare the next generation of human rights scholars and professionals, promote cutting edge human rights research and scholarship, and curate programming on human rights issues locally, nationally, and internationally. I am author of Human Rights and Justice for All: Demanding Dignity in the United States and Around the World (Routledge) and All Necessary Measures: The United Nations and Humanitarian Intervention (University of Pennsylvania Press). I have published articles on mass atrocity, ethnic cleansing, humanitarian intervention and international human rights trials in Human Rights Quarterly, Journal of Peace Research, Journal of Human Rights, International Journal of Human Rights, and Civil Wars, among others. Previously, I was Professor of Political Science at Albion College and Faculty Director of the Gerald R. Ford Institute for Leadership in Public Policy and Service focused on creating intentional, hands-on, experiential learning and professional development opportunities for students that complement their in class learning.I teach courses in International Politics and Human Rights and advocacy.I earned my BA in International Relations from James Madison College at Michigan State University (Go State!) and Masters degrees in Strategic Studies and Political Science from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth and the University of Minnesota. I earned my PhD in Political Science with a minor in Human Rights from the University of Minnesota in 2008 and was a postdoctoral fellow with the Michigan Society of Fellows at the Gerald R. Ford School of Public Policy, University of Michigan (20••••11).Early career experience includes program and development work with Women for Women International and administrative support at the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington, DC.
