About Carrie Hahnel

Carrie Hahnel is a nonprofit leader and education policy expert with 25 years of experience advancing educational equity. She is a Senior Associate Partner at Bellwether on the Policy & Evaluation team, and has previously held leadership roles at the Opportunity Institute, the Education Trust-West, and the KIPP Foundation. She has also served as an independent policy and research consultant to nonprofit education organizations. In these roles, she has excelled at crafting organizational and policy strategy, leading teams, building and managing partnerships, directing research, and supporting colleagues to achieve goals and maximize impact. Carrie has expertise in analyzing policy, conducting research, advocating for policy and practice change, and using data to drive improvement. She enjoys working with data, demystifying complex information, and writing for a broad audience. She has authored numerous publications and op-eds and has commented extensively on public education, particularly in California. Her policy expertise is in school finance, school accountability, education data systems, and structural economic and educational inequalities. She has also worked in afterschool education, charter schools, and arts education.
