ABOUT CAROLYN HAO
I am a historian, singer, and aspiring ornithologist who is drawn to the archival preservation of wildlife through sound. I am particularly interested in capturing and preserving natural soundscapes, and seek to explore the way in which sound - or a lack thereof - can depict what we have lost. At Harvard, I am a joint concentrator in History of Science and Music with a secondary in East Asian Studies. I am a John Harvard Scholar, and my academic trajectory has been a unique combination of my interests in environmental protection and songwriting/composition. Much of my work reflects on the ways in which art can be utilized to process and respond to the climate crisis. At Berklee, I am a member of the Jazz and Gender Justice Institute, where I study with some of the world\'s leading jazz musicians and spend time honing my skills in improvisation, vocal technique, and harmony/theory. Outside of jazz, I explore genres such as folk, music theater, choral, classical, and contemporary, and have experience both with performance and music directing/conducting. In my career as an independent musician, I have amassed over streams of my music. I intend to capture and document the beauty of the natural world through the art that I make (songs, films, poems) in hopes that the preservation of ephemeral moments can contribute to conservation efforts.
