Minneapolis, MN, US

I provide direct patient care to dermatology patients in a fast-paced private practice clinic. As a team lead, I coordinate Mohs surgery operations for my team of three other medical assistants, a Mohs surgeon, and a Mohs technician, facilitating care for 6-10 surgical patients each day. Mohs surgery is a specialized type of skin cancer removal surgery that is often unpredictable. These patient visits range from 2-5 hours. Ahead of a patient\'s visit, my responsibilities include screening for complicating factors by conducting a pre-op questionnaire, ensuring paperwork is in order, and overseeing that our team has all the materials we need to succeed. I facilitate the flow of the surgeon\'s day by anticipating and clearing barriers for my team, managing interpersonal communications between my team, patients, providers, and clinic leadership, and providing direct support to patients. Before and after their visits, I field and tend to the questions our patients call in about, sharing answers from their provider. Additionally, I coordinate referrals to plastic surgeons for particularly complex cases near the eyes, ears, nose, or mouth.

ABOUT CAROLINE SAKSENA

I\'m interested in making health more accessible: providing people in need with available medical treatments, education, and support that will help improve the quality of their lives. One of my long-term goals is to improve healthcare delivery at a systemic level to better serve the needs of local communities. I\'m applying to MD/MPH programs where I can learn how to merge and apply my interests in medicine, clinical research, and public health to make the most positive impact on my communities.I enjoy learning about science and human health, sharing what I know, and bridging gaps. Through formal and informal projects, I\'ve gained skills and experience with collaborative open-science research, assisting in a fast-paced medical clinic, and interpersonal communication. These days, you can find me leading a surgical team at Tareen Dermatology, a dermatology practice in the Twin Cities. Outside of work, I\'m often running, experimenting in the kitchen, and creating music.
