About Caroline Eick

I began my career in the field of addiction treatment in Montreal, Canada, and then served as Director of Education for Pavilion International, a Treatment Center in North Carolina, where I also developed family programs and cultivated a shared leadership model. My article “Tapping the Core,” published in the Professional Counselor, articulated the role of core emotional addictions (to power-control, security, sensation, suffering) in fueling compulsive behaviors. My work with families in recovery further stirred my interest in the connections between family dynamics and broader institutional processes. After ten years in the field, I redirected my energies to earn an interdisciplinary Ph.D. in Educational Policy Studies that combined the fields of history, sociology and anthropology to examine the role of broader social influences in shaping opportunities for self-empowerment. During my academic career, I became Associate Professor and Chair of the Education Department at Mount St. Mary’s University and served as Director of the University Honors Program. I also developed and taught courses in Globalization and Education, and lecture series that examined the role of education in the cultivation of self-empowerment. Now, as Co-Founder of the Center for Heart-Mind Coherence, I draw on my addiction treatment background, academic research in diversity, globalization and cross-group relations, knowledge as licensed HeartMath Mentor/Coach, graduate of the Hakomi Somatic Psychotherapy, and over thirty years of commitment to the practice of mindfulness and wholeheartedness to help clients own and transform blocked emotional energy into creative living. I seek to empower people to engage their innate strengths in creative transformations of their lives and in loving contributions to their communities and the world.
