About Carole Chabries

I help colleges and universities solve a problem most institutions struggle with, and sometimes inadvertently bring on themselves: they promote great faculty and staff into leadership roles, then leave them to figure out how to lead *people* on their own.The folks who get promoted into leadership roles (such as chairs, directors, managers, and deans) are brilliant at their work. But they need help translating those skills into leading people—navigating conflict, building trusting teams, facilitating complex collaborations, and more.That\'s what I do—and I\'ve been on both sides of this challenge. I spent nearly three decades in campus leadership roles (including as a dean and vice-provost) before founding Third Rail Leadership to help other leaders navigate these complexities without losing themselves in the process.Through Third Rail Leadership, I bring practical, research-based leadership training directly to campuses. My signature workshop, 10½ Lessons for Leaders, equips 50-100 emerging leaders at once with tools they can use immediately—plus a full year of support to make sure the learning sticks.I\'ve worked with Duke, UW-Madison, Macalester, Rhodes College, University of Missouri, and dozens of other institutions nationwide—through workshops, keynotes, and individual and group coaching. I also partner with higher education consortia and regional associations, including CUPA-HR and MPCC.My background as an educator shapes everything I design. I don\'t just teach leadership theory—I help leaders translate the skills they already have (like teaching) into effective leadership practice. And yes, people actually enjoy the work: past participants have called my workshops \"the very best I have ever attended\" and thanked me for \"taking care of people while teaching them.\"Beyond workshops, I write The Leadership LiveWire, a weekly newsletter for academic leaders, and I offer Lead Like a Teacher, a four-week, self-guided mini-course for educators stepping into leadership roles.Let\'s connect if:>> You\'re at a college or university investing in leadership development>> You work with higher ed institutions and know decision-makers in faculty or staff development>> You\'re building leadership capacity in academic settingsBased in Milwaukee. Working with institutions nationwide.
