My vision for Union City has been consistent during the 17 years I served as Councilmember, Vice Mayor and Planning Commissioner. This vision continues as I continue in my 8th year as mayor. I picture Union City as a vibrant, growing community that offers a safe and happy environment for children, families, and seniors as we honor our rich multi-cultural heritage.COVID-19 threw our economy into a tailspin. My temperament, experience, knowledge, and accounting skills have lent a steady hand to how Union City is responding to this crisis. My first priority is the health and safety of our residents and employees. Fiscal stability and transparency continue among my top priorities during our recovery as we adapt and move forward towards a healthy economy. Black Lives Matter shined a spotlight on systemic racism. I committed to the Obama Foundation Mayor’s pledge and formed our Policing and Community Engagement Committee to hear your concerns and transform policing. I am working with our county and Fire Department to reimagine mental health, fire, and emergency medical response. I advocate for our Youth and Family Services programs to support our at-risk youth. I work hard to create housing for the homeless and for all income levels, and a cleaner, safer, healthier environment that addresses climate change. I fight for transportation systems, such as Dumbarton Rail, bicycle and pedestrian paths, and parks and open space to improve our quality of life. You deserve a mayor that makes decisions for the good of our community, now and for future generations.

ABOUT CAROL DUTRA-VERNACI
Carol Dutra-Vernaci is in her second term as Union City Mayor. She made history on December 11, 2012 when she was sworn in as the first woman mayor of Union City. Being elected mayor capped more than two decades of volunteering and public service. She is a third generation Union City resident; growing up in Decoto and now living in Alvarado. She is a graduate of James Logan High School, Class of 1972, and alumna of California State University Hayward with a degree in Psychology and Taxation education.
