ABOUT CARMEN MARLEY

I am a Johnson Scholar at Washington and Lee University pursuing a BS in Chemistry with a minor in Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. I am passionate about scientific advancement and human health, and I am interested in a career in clinical research through an MD-PhD. Throughout my college experience, I have contributed to multiple research projects, and I currently work in a biochemistry lab examining the impact of transposable elements on gene expression. I have also had the opportunity to volunteer extensively throughout the Rockbridge County community, and it has truly been one of the most meaningful parts of my time at W&L. Whether it be teaching young girls about science at a local after-school program or providing extra support to patients on Hospice, my volunteer experiences have shaped my perspectives on education, health care, and community well-being. While I find it rewarding in and of itself to use my time to give back to others, I also hope to bring what I\'ve learned in these situations to my research and interactions with patients down the line.
