ABOUT CARMEN DEL GUERCIO

First learned about the Maryland Food Bank while working for M&T Bank, a long-time supporter of the organization. Growing up as the child of Italian immigrant factory workers, my family was just one event away from food insecurity. Being part of MFB was a great way to help the one in three Marylanders who are experiencing food insecurity. I was asked to join the Board in 2016 and the following year, when the President & CEO role opened up, I knew what I needed to do. Leaving money banking to work in food banking may not seem like an obvious path, but I’ve never looked back. During my time leading this incredible operation, we’ve expanded our relationships with businesses, growers, retailers and wholesalers, significantly increasing the number of people we serve and the quality of the food we provide. Today, we are focused on addressing the root causes of food insecurity with our ultimate goal to make food banks obsolete. The only way we can tackle a societal problem as pressing as food insecurity is to change our thinking and develop new ways by which we operate while also collaborating with and leveraging strengths of other organizations. I am inspired every day by the new ideas we are working on to end hunger for more Marylanders. My other passion is working with the next generation of nonprofit leadership, particularly those who are currently working in the for-profit sector and looking for a greater sense of purpose in their “2nd act”. I am a proud graduate of the GBC Leadership program and was humbled to be named Governor Hogan’s Champion of Service award and recognized as a Baltimore Game Changer by Baltimore magazine in 2021, both a result of the work MFB did to support Marylanders through the COVID 19 pandemic. I grew up in Massachusetts where my folks settled when they arrived from Italy, but consider myself a Marylander now. In my downtime, you can find me catching an Oriole or Ravens game or spending time on the Eastern Shore. I am also a proud father of three adult daughters who I am grateful still like to spend time with their parents- especially since making us grandparents.
