About Carmela Shabazz

Obstacles made me a stronger leader.I started working at the age of fifteen in my dad and uncle’s auto repair shop answering phones and cleaning the stock room. Starting from humble beginnings, I’ve had the opportunity to work at some great places, do some great things, and work for some great people (my dad and uncle included ). In addition to work, I’ve had the opportunity to lead and learn in various volunteer capacities in my sorority, at church, and community organizations. These experiences helped develop me into the leader I am today.The idea of leadership and how leaders make an organization a great place to work and grow always intrigued me. Facing the obstacles of leaders with poor communication skills helped me to communicate better, become intrinsically motivated myself and find ways to motivate my team. Being excluded or overlooked by leaders because of ethnicity or gender sparked my desire to give everybody a seat at the table and allowing that voice to be heard. I see value and worth in what each person brings. I was not given opportunities for growth by some managers in my past. Now, as a leader myself, I create and give opportunities to others allowing them to shine, developing their strengths and developing them in areas where they were weak.From public and private companies to community organizations, I’ve advanced my leadership skills in developing clear and compelling picture of what needs to be done and why; leading by example and motivating people to excel, meet the challenge, and persevere; initiating and facilitating needed change; knowing internal and external realities to guide what needs to be changed; identifying and communicating future ideals; and implementing processes for transformation. My joy in leadership comes with seeing someone grow and advance their career.
