The Universal Desk edits and publishes stories across the spectrum of The Athletic\'s 24/7 content. We do line editing and all that it entails, photo selection and placement with stories, captions, headline and search headline writing, give feedback to other editors, keep watch for problematic language, including sexist, racist and ableist terms, and more. We bring our experience to bear in terms of news judgment, appropriate tone and keeping the publication\'s voice in mind in all that we do. Among my tools are the AP Stylebook, an in-house style guide, trusted sports reference sites, resources from GLAAD and the Trans Journalist Association, Garner\'s Modern American Usage, Dreyer\'s English, Conscious Style, tips from other copy editors, and more.

ABOUT CARLY DUBOIS

For further insight into my professional career, I hope you\'ll check out the recommendations that colleagues and clients have written about me. They help tell the story of my career of 20-plus years. It includes daily newspaper writing, editing, page design and layout, management, project planning, online blogging and editing, managing digital content, assigning stories, corporate writing and editing, investigative journalism and more. I excel at editing quickly for the internet on stories, photo captions, links and headlines. I can write or polish corporate newsletters, online content, internal communications, business proposals and technical writing and have extensive experience with SEO principles and changes. I am available for full-time work, temporary or long-term contract writing and editing. My tool kit includes fluency in AP style, and I am experienced in and adaptable to other company-specific styles. I have won more than 70 writing awards in state and regional journalism writing contests, and I\'ve done plenty of line editing for other award-winning journalists. I am a member of the American Copy Editors Society, the Association for Women in Sports Media and the Trans Journalists Association, three wonderful and important organizations. I\'ve learned a lot in years of working with writers and other editors in multiple professions and platforms on style, English grammar, accuracy, clean copy, attention to detail, research, interviewing techniques and news judgment. In these areas I am equally comfortable with inverted-pyramid and narrative storytelling. Whether on daily newspaper deadlines or in the ongoing news cycle of the 24/7 internet, I\'ve edited on tight deadlines and understand the demands those place on writers. Once you become accustomed to the pace, you always hear the internal clock ticking toward the next deadline or assignment. I also derived great benefit from studying writing-as-cinema-of-the-mind under Pulitzer Prize-winning author Robert Olen Butler.
