About Carlos J. Malave
I’m Carlos J. Malave—2x author, curriculum expert, and educational consultant dedicated to transforming how we teach, lead, and connect. As the author of the top-selling book No More Dancing and the visionary behind the Restorative Power Program, I’ve spent over a decade in K-12 education evolving into a national speaker, curriculum developer, and coach. My work equips educators, students, and organizations with practical tools rooted in restorative practices, resilience, and relational leadership. My signature Restorative Power Curriculum is currently implemented in schools and organizations across the U.S. and internationally. It’s designed to help communities move from punishment to connection, from silence to meaningful dialogue. In 2018, I was recognized by Texas legislators for helping advance policy to bring restorative practices into public education. That same year, my work was featured on ABC 13 News. Over the past four years, I’ve helped curriculum clients generate over $1 million in sales, supporting them in building, scaling, and selling impactful programs. With deep experience in higher education and a passion for empowering youth to find strength in vulnerability, I focus on fostering perseverance, empathy, and purpose. Originally from New York, I now live in Houston, Texas, with my wife and daughter—continuing this mission through curriculum development, speaking, and coaching.Let’s build culture, restore connection, and create systems that serve all learners.
Experience
Director of Culture and Community
Jun 2025 — Present · Houston, TX, US
Leadership & Coaching- I actively coach, develop, and evaluate our Culture and Community Team—including Counselors, the Family Resource and University Coordinator, and Fellows. I also facilitate ongoing professional development and provide live coaching to teachers on restorative practices, student engagement, and holding high expectations with love.Restorative School Culture- I lead the implementation of our restorative culture with a focus on building prosocial skills rather than relying on punitive discipline. I develop and execute re-entry plans for scholars post-suspension, including personalized behavior support and intentional family engagement. I determine restorative actions and consequences for Tier 2 and 3 behaviors to ensure alignment with our values.Community Engagement & Scholar Experience- Each week, I facilitate community meetings that uplift scholar identity, celebrate achievements, and promote emotional wellness. I create and manage advisory lessons that emphasize positive self-identity, connection, and social-emotional learning, while also cultivating mission-aligned partnerships and overseeing a variety of extracurricular programs.Strategic Planning & School Climate- In partnership with our Superintendent, I set and track strategic goals focused on school climate, discipline, staff culture, and family engagement. I participate in weekly leadership meetings and quarterly retreats to help steer key district-wide initiatives.Operational & Grant Oversight- I maintain transparent discipline records and ensure restorative systems are clear and consistent across our campus. I work closely with our operations team to build an affirming, welcoming school environment, and manage the Stronger Connections Grant alongside our grant manager to support our ongoing impact.
