ABOUT CARLOS A. HERRERA

An investment data science and quantitative risk management professional, I thrive at the intersection of research, analytics, technology and finance. As an engineer by training, I dissect and bring structure to complex problems, delivering integrated solutions that provide consistent framing and actionable information to investment and business challenges. From roles as a risk manager, researcher, consultant and machine design engineer, my value is defined by three themes:(1) a holistic, systems perspective, channeling rigor into practical solutions that focus on the right questions,(2) active listening and communication, including large, diverse and at-times skeptical audiences and (3) partnership building, globally, with colleagues, clients, vendors and academics. My experience spans all phases of a project’s lifecycle plus team building and leadership. At a $20B pension fund, I recently established my team’s first comprehensive, multi-asset risk, asset allocation and quantitative framework, also reassessing our entire data and analytics platform. Previously, I developed broad-use models, custom analyses and research content to inform portfolio and risk management via different lenses, with a large global client base (private and institutional, AUM as high as $150B+). I also launched new methodologies in the private market space, enabling leveraging of my firm’s proprietary partnership and company data, regarded as one of the industry’s most robust benchmarks. In my next endeavor, I seek to develop and implement forward-looking strategies, frameworks and solutions in portfolio/risk management, research and other financial services, blending best practices in financial data science and ML with domain expertise and current technologies and systems. A collaborative setting that fosters innovation in an investment office, FinTech or software company, private equity or professional services firm is ideal. I am also open to opportunities/projects to uncover new insights in areas of personal interest: healthcare, health & fitness/wellness, technology and automotive.
