There are several parts of mineral exploration that a geologist participates in. Those parts are mainly:Describing known mineral depositsBased on it\'s characteristics, determine where the ore \"will be\" as the mine digs deeperFinding new prospects of mineral depositsIn mines already under exploration, geologists describe the characteristics of the ore and try to predict where in that mine we should dig to find more ore. Basically geologists try to \"follow\" the mineralized zone as the mine digs deeper.Not only that but scientific research on mineral exploration describes what are the conditions and processes that led to the formation of the ore, which minerals are associated with the ore and other characteristics of the mineralized zone.On the other hand, indirectly, geologists who make geological maps describe the rocks, structures and minerals that occur in the area they are mapping. So an exploration geologist can look at those informations and see if they correlate with the characteristics usually found in, let\'s say, a gold deposit. For instance, if it\'s common to gold to happen in a specific vein type with specific mineral assemblages and a mapping geologist described this association in the field, that is one good place to look for gold. So an exploration geologist should go there and search for gold, and then calculate if the ore has economic potential to become a mine.
