About Carlos Bocanegra

I thrill seeing wireless shaping our world, and it is exciting to be a part of it. From delivering high mobile data-rates under unprecedented device densities, to achieving seamless and interactionless checkout in stores, I spend my days devising, enhancing, and building wireless systems to ease our lives and help us be more connected.This passion has accompanied me since my childhood when I was tasked to work on a research project, for which I decided to build an FM radio. In all honesty, my setup composed of a loose copper line rolled up around cylindrical cardboard didn’t catch a single signal, but it picked my curiosity. It led me to pursue a Bachelor\'s degree in Electrical Engineering at UPC, ranked the best Engineering school in Spain. During my senior year, I moved to Boston and had my first encounter with research, a.k.a working on a challenging engineering problem with no known solution. I was drawn to it, so I applied and got accepted for a Ph.D. in Computer engineering at Northeastern University.From that moment on, I’ve devised and implemented wireless solutions for a world that sees an ever-increasing demand for connectivity under the challenging scenario of spectrum scarcity. Particularly, my solutions have a strong focus on the lower end of the stack, i.e, PHY- and MAC-layers, and encompass an algorithmic framework for theoretical assessment and an implementation stage for validation in realistic environments. My works involved collaboration with other researchers, who with their talent and vision taught me to cater my research efforts towards real needs.
