About Carla Zanoni
Carla Zanoni is an award-winning, empathetic, high-impact, strategic team developer and leader with 2+ decades of experience in journalism, audience development, brand marketing, and data analytics. Carla built audience development efforts at leading media organizations including TED, The Wall Street Journal + DNAinfo, where she led with the mantra “data, not drama.” Today, she leads the engagement journalism program at CUNY’s Newmark Graduate School of Journalism, produces and guides media strategy for The On Being Project, and consults with publishers and thought leaders on media and narrative strategy. Carla is a skilled change manager with a proven track record of pivoting traditional media into data-informed digital enterprises. At TED, Carla built and oversaw its first audience development, marketing, and analytics departments, and created an award-winning content team, bringing in ~500 million views annually. She introduced new and younger audiences to traditional content and new formats and re-engaged fans on their preferred distribution platforms, generating deep engagement and driving millions in revenue. Carla launched TEDTok on TikTok, winning a 2023 People’s Choice Webby and 2023 Shorty Award for Best Use of TikTok. That same year, TED was named the No. 1 most engaged with brand on LinkedIn by the platform and given Gold + Audience Honors Shorty awards for Best Use of LinkedIn. In 2021, her team also won a Webby for their Body Tour series on Instagram. At the WSJ, Carla was the first Audience and Analytics editor, and first Latina, named to the masthead. She helped lead a global digital newsroom transformation, doubling the publication’s traffic and launching state-of-the-art news delivery and storytelling on new platforms, such as Snapchat, Messenger, Alexa + more. Carla is a sought-after and seasoned public speaker with a passion for interviewing guests and moderating panels, from town halls to prominent global stages at TED and WSJ in addition to the IJF in Perugia, Social Media Week, the INMA World Congress + more.She shares personal essays in her monthly newsletter, The Em Dash. Carla is writing a literary memoir about coming of age in 90s New York — reconciling her immigrant childhood, the city’s underworld, and the detours that led her here.Her work has appeared in The New York Times, TueNight, Modern Loss, The Common literary magazine + more. Carla was born in Argentina, bred in New Jersey, and splits her time between Upper Manhattan and The Catskills.
