ABOUT CARL SCHRECK
Dr. Carl Schreck joined the North Carolina Institute for Climate Studies (NCICS) in August 2010 after completing his PhD at the University at Albany. He serves as a Research Scholar at NCICS, as an adjunct Assistant Professor with North Carolina State University’s Department of Marine, Earth, and Atmospheric Sciences, and as an adjunct Associate Professor with NC A&T.Dr. Schreck investigates tropical weather and its impacts around the globe. He is particularly interested in identifying and predicting the Madden–Julian Oscillation (MJO) and equatorial waves. Dr. Schreck engages with partners in private industry to explore how these systems can improve long-range forecasts of weather risk over the United States, including hurricanes, extreme precipitation, and extreme temperatures.He also partners with forecasters at NOAA’s Climate Prediction Center and National Hurricane Center to improve extended forecasts of tropical cyclogenesis and tropical rainfall. One of his passions is assessing and reducing uncertainties in the historical tropical cyclone best tracks.Dr. Schreck also leads the tropical and synoptic sections of NCEI’s monthly climate reports and is co-editor of the annual “State of the Climate” report for the Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society.
