ABOUT CARL OLSON
I am the County Traffic Engineer (Civil Engineering Supervisor) for Clackamas County, where I lead the Traffic Safety and Motor Carrier Safety teams in delivering safe, efficient, and accessible transportation systems. My responsibilities include supervising and mentoring staff, overseeing traffic signal and ITS operations, managing traffic signing and pavement striping, and leading safety-focused capital improvement projects. I also work closely with colleagues in Maintenance, Planning, Capital Projects, and Development to ensure coordination across disciplines. In addition, I support public safety through outreach initiatives, crash data analysis, speed zone assessments, and incident response planning. I’m passionate about finding innovative, data-driven solutions to improve transportation safety for all users.My expertise spans traffic signal timing, traffic engineering and ITS design, systems engineering, roadway safety analysis, signing/striping design, lighting design, project management, and stakeholder coordination. I bring over a decade of experience working across jurisdictions to solve complex transportation challenges, with a focus on long-term safety and operational excellence.I received my Master\'s of Science in Civil Engineering from Portland State University in 2012. During my time off, I enjoy spending time with my wife and kids, fishing, camping, reading, woodworking and working on home projects.
