As the City Attorney, I plan, direct and coordinate comprehensive legal services for the City. The City Attorney serves as the chief legal advisor to the City, and is responsible for providing counsel to the Mayor, Council, Department Directors, City Staff, committees, boards and commissions; Provides legal advice to guide City policies, decisions and activities. The City Attorney also litigates on behalf of the City and supervises and directs representation of the City at various court levels. This position is a member of the City’s management team, and occupies a significant role in supporting the critical decision making on the part of both the City Council and City administration. Manages and supervises City Attorney’s office operations to achieve goals within available resources; plans and organizes workloads and staff assignments; trains; motivates and evaluates assigned staff; reviews progress and directs changes as needed. Determines work procedures, prepares work schedules, and expedites workflow; studies and standardizes procedures to improve efficiency and effectiveness of operations and provision of service.Assures that assigned areas of responsibility are performed within budget; performs cost control activities; monitors revenues and expenditures in assigned area to assure sound fiscal control; prepares annual budget requests; assures effective and efficient use of budgeted funds, personnel, materials, facilities and time.Exercises a high degree of initiative, independence, professional expertise, and supervision. Forms and executes broad policy in the management, administration, and supervision of activities within the city attorney office. Work is widely varied, involving analyzing and evaluating many complex and significant variables.
