ABOUT CARISA PARRISH
I am a child psychologist at Children’s Mercy Kansas City, professor at University of Missouri, Kansas City, and adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. I work with children and families, lead the section of pediatric psychology (consultation/inpatient programs), and conduct research on children\'s emotional development. My focus is on supporting parents to enhance how children respond to stress and cope with emotions. I am the primary psychologist for the pediatric burn center and psychology director for acute behavioral health program development at Children’s Mercy Kansas City. My clinical role in these medical programs includes medical adherence and adjustment/coping with medical stress. I have worked with a range of pediatric specialty programs and have integrated psychology within several multidisciplinary programs to provide trauma-informed patient- and family-centered care. I have published on emotion regulation, mindfulness, and parent stress associated with pediatric burn injuries. My current research focuses on understanding child and parent adjustment to children\'s burn injuries and how to use evidence-based approaches to enhance child and parent coping with stress. Clinically, I have a special interest in working with parents to optimize parent-child relationships, reduce parenting distress, and improve children\'s emotion regulation, behavioral adjustment, and coping with acute and chronic health conditions. I also have interests in addressing quality improvement efforts in pediatric clinical care and addressing health disparities. I enjoy providing educational workshops on topics related to psychological adjustment to pediatric burn injuries, emotion regulation, and behavior therapy for disruptive behavior disorders.
