About Cansu Demirel-Floyd
Cansu holds a BSc in Geological Engineering from Istanbul Technical University, where the focus was on slope stability. Subsequently, she pursued an MSc in Environmental Geochemistry and Geomicrobiology, delving into Cu bioleaching, acid mine drainage geochemistry, and geomicrobiology. Her Ph.D. work at Istanbul Technical University concentrated on Geobiology, exploring soda and brine lake geochemistry, geomicrobiology, and stromatolite formation. The University of Oklahoma phase, after transferring her PhD, involved planetary geochemistry and astrobiology, investigating chemical weathering in glaciated settings, glacier geobiology, terrestrial biosignatures, and weathering on Mars. She also has contributed to NASA mission proposals on Mars cave astrobiology and biosignature detection. Looking ahead, her future research interests include the analysis of planetary brines and biosignature detection using Raman spectroscopy.Climate TechCurrently, Cansu is carrying out laboratory proof-of-concept studies on CO2 sequestration by mineral dissolution in abandoned mine pit lakes. Green MiningPreviously, her research and development pursuits encompassed Ni and Co extraction from Ni laterites, Cu bioleaching, Li extraction from various clays, and the chemical and biological pre-treatment of Li clays and Ni laterite ores. Additionally, she was involved in upstream purification of Li and Ni leach solutions, as well as exploring Li brine formation and selective Li recovery from brines.
