I was invited to Chair the advisory group when it was set up in 2022. I’d been involved with a number of BBSRC committees and advisory groups over the years, and joining this group felt like a real opportunity to bring some of my EDI expertise and advocacy to the work of my main funder. The group brings together colleagues with diverse bioscience backgrounds from universities and partner organisations across the UK. We bring our roles and lived experiences to help inform the work BBSRC do. We identify and reflect on relevant data, help prioritise actions that will have the most impact, and generally act as a ‘critical friend’ to check and challenge BBSRC’s approach to improving EDI for the biosciences community. My role as Chair is to help steer the agenda and discussions of the group, ensure that all voices and perspectives are heard, and work with colleagues in BBSRC to keep progressing the work.
ABOUT CANDY ROWE
I am a successful academic with over 25 years of research experience, often working in multidisciplinary teams to understand mechanisms of behaviour. In that time, I have established a strong publication record, held a series of large and collaborative grants, and enabled students and junior colleagues to develop successful careers.With over a decade of senior leadership experience in Higher Education I bring a blend of credibility, strategic insight and personal drive that make me ideally placed to lead my new culture and inclusion portfolio with impact. I understand the complexity of leading across a large institution with competing priorities. I thrive in matrix environments, make independent decisions when needed, and offer trusted, thoughtful advice on challenging issues to colleagues at all levels.I have a proven track record of delivering culture and equality, diversity and inclusion (EDI) transformation at scale. I have delivered two Athena SWAN Silver Awards, the ‘For Families’ Project (which won a Universities HR Award for Culture and Organisational Development), founded the successful NUAcT Fellowship scheme, and now lead a team working together delivering the University\'s Research Culture Programme. These initiatives have delivered measurable change by embedding values into day-to-day practice, and has built stronger, more inclusive communities across our campuses.Research culture is now, quite rightly, high on the national agenda - improving research culture is not just ‘the right thing to do’, but essential for attracting and retaining talent, increasing innovation, and securing future funding. I want to ensure that Newcastle University leads this agenda – ready to respond to emerging evaluation frameworks and visibly positioned to capitalize on new opportunities as they arise.
