ABOUT CALLUM W.

I am a final year medical student at the University of Glasgow and have previously been awarded a first-class intercalated degree in emergency medicine. I have led multiple medical education, quality improvement and research projects, which have led to publications and abstracts at national and international conferences. Alongside my own projects, I am an associate editor of the British Student Doctor Journal, the official journal of the Academy of Medical Educators, where I handle the editorial process for manuscripts across all sections of the journal. I am interested in a clinical academic career with interests in emergency medicine, intensive care medicine and anaesthetics. I am currently focusing on obtaining an SFP post.Alongside my studies, I have a keen interest in health policy and advocate for improved conditions for doctors and medical students. I am currently serving my second term as the deputy chair of the BMA’s UK Medical Students’ Committee. In this role, I am the national lead for the education portfolio at an exciting and turbulent time for medical education and training. I have led campaigns on multiple issues, including the foundation programme recruitment system, which has successfully led to the government agreeing to our policy to prioritise UK graduates for foundation training. In this role, I work with fellow BMA officers, reps and staff alongside key stakeholders, including the UK Foundation Programme Office (UKFPO), the Medical Schools’ Council and the GMC (General Medical Council) to represent all UK medical students on the important issues facing them. Outside of medicine, I am a keen sailor, and during my summers at university, I have worked as a senior sailing instructor at various centres in the UK and abroad in Greece.
