ABOUT CAITLIN MCDERMOTT
I am a dedicated and results-driven Clinical Research Coordinator for the Developing Brain Institute (DBI) at Children’s National Hospital. Given my passion for complex congenital malformations, I work primarily as the lead coordinator of fetal studies (predominantly liaising with the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU), Heart and Kidney Unit (HKU), and Fetal Echocardiogram Clinic in my daily interactions). In my current position, I work with leading experts in the fields of neurodevelopment and epigenetics, learning from their research on outcomes in children with pre-existing congenital heart conditions. With five years of combined experience at various intersections of healthcare and research, I have honed my skills in empirically capturing neurological outcomes of children with pre-existing conditions; investigating neural plasticity with regards to the language faculties of individuals with acquired brain injuries; and performing methods of non-invasive neuromodulation as a mechanism to enhance our daily cognitive functioning. I consistently deliver increased patient retention rates and recruitment rates for my employers at the DBI, and delivered a similar fervor in my tenure as a student/undergraduate researcher at Georgetown University.My journey in medicine has allowed me to work on research, patient-focused care, and clinical ethics, where I have further solidified my interest in pursuing an MD/PhD program in the future. I thrive in dynamic environments, collaborating with cross-functional teams to solve complex challenges and drive innovation. I am committed to ongoing learning and growth, continuously expanding my knowledge in the frontiers of neuroscience.
