ABOUT BYRON SMITH

Growing up I never dreamed of working in facilities and sometimes you just have to lean into opportunities as they arise. That’s how I ended up in facilities.a job became available and I applied. I had no experience but liked the idea of working with and delivering something “concrete”. So I immersed myself into a facilities role and worked hard. Success came- we relocated or renovated 10 financial services offices in my first 3 years of my career. I led these projects end to end- from site search to move management…it was incredibly gratifying to walk about and “touch” something your contribution had built. My facilities career progressed from there. Soon after I made a move to IG Wealth Management - one of Canada’s largest financial services company. The national real estate foot print and volume of projects was easily 20 times larger than that of my previous employer, but so was our team and it was a tremendous experience to lead and learn from others. I was at IG for 11 years in progressively more senior roles and I’m really proud what the team achieved. I feel our biggest accomplishment was developing a new concept of sales offices and then testing and rolling out an office refresh program, which updated 20 offices in 3 years. Among other things, I enjoy an opportunity to learn and building great relationships upon the foundation of integrity, honesty, engagement and respect. On a personal level, I’m really into curling and cottaging – and the occasional do it yourself project.
