ABOUT MAGGIE BUTLER
My research uses biosocial approaches and mixed methods to examine birthing peoples\' health in the United States, focusing on extending the concept of authoritative knowledge to better understand experiences of human lactation and postpartum mental health. Presently, I am a postdoctoral scholar in the Department of Preventive Medicine at Northwestern University’s Feinberg School of Medicine.I am a four-field trained anthropologist with concentrations in biocultural anthropology and human biology. I received my Ph.D, M.A, and a certificate in Society, Biology, and Health from Northwestern University. I also completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Center of Excellence in Maternal and Child Health at University Illinois Chicago’s School of Public Health. My research interests are at the intersections of anthropology, reproductive health and justice, public health, and medicine. I graduated from Ithaca College in 2017 with a Bachelor of Arts in anthropology and a minor in environmental studies. I conducted bioarchaeological research on historical infant and fetal skeletal remains from the U.S, as well as qualitative research on breastfeeding experiences among mothers in Ithaca, New York.
