About Burton Davis

Burton Davis is a Vice President and Deputy General Counsel in Microsoft\'s Legal Affairs group with experience leading teams providing a wide range of business critical legal support. In his current role, Burton leads Microsoft\'s Intellectual Property Group, a world-leading team responsible for company strategy in patents, copyright, open data and open source. In his previous role at Microsoft, Burton led the team supporting Microsoft\'s Azure cloud services business, providing strategic legal advice on a broad range of issues including regulatory compliance, litigation, mergers and acquisitions, and commercial partnerships in the United States and abroad. Earlier in his Microsoft career, Burton led teams supporting IP transactions and patent licensing as well as teams counseling Microsoft\'s Marketing organization on advertising law, antitrust, commercial law, trademarks, privacy, and regulatory compliance. He has also provided general legal support for the Windows Business and Marketing group, and advised on antitrust law and regulatory compliance for Microsoft engineering and sales divisions.Before joining Microsoft in 2003, Burton practiced law at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in Washington, D.C. He received his law degree from the Yale Law School in 1996. Following graduation from law school, he served as law clerk to the Honorable T.S. Ellis, of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia.
