About Kerem Bulbul

I am currently a Senior Principal Applied Scientist in the EC2 Capacity organization at Amazon Web Services. EC2 is Amazon\'s virtual machine compute platform, and the EC2 fleet comprises millions of machines in multiple locations, and its management involves complex trade-offs between utilization and capacity availability. Many of the business problems scientists in EC2 Capacity tackle are concerned with matching supply and demand at various horizons, from a sub-second scale for execution to multiple years for strategic planning. In a typical project, we analyze large volumes of data, and then develop statistical or ML models for predictions, which are then typically input into very large-scale prescriptive optimization problems. The resulting solutions or policies are frequently validated in simulations-After graduating from Boğaziçi University, Istanbul, with a BS degree in Industrial Engineering (IE), I obtained my PhD degree in Industrial Engineering & Operations Research (OR) from University of California at Berkeley in 2002. Following a one-year stint at the technology startup Rapt Inc, I returned to Turkey in 2003 and joined the IE Program at Sabancı University, where I taught OR and advanced analytics courses to both undergraduate and graduate students. I served as the Head of the IE Program for a 3.5 year period until January 2018 and was promoted to full Professor of IE in March 2018. My main expertise is on prescriptive analytics, including deterministic and stochastic optimization with an emphasis on decomposition methods and computational optimization. I am also a founding partner of Accelera Business Solutions, an advanced analytics and data science technology and services provider in Istanbul.
