Sometime in the early 1990’s, bored at my corporate desk, I daydreamed about the type of business that would be fun to own. In my business planner I scribbled “How do you produce beer?” along with questions about the process, materials and equipment needed. Thoughts that would remain dormant for the next 20 years. My son, Jay, was 1 year old when I scribbled those thoughts.Jay graduated from college in May 2013. He came home without a job and was very unsettled about what he wanted to do for work. Of course, being an impatient father and wanting to solve “problems”, I charged ahead with discussing his possibilities and trying to get him fully employed as soon as possible. He remained reluctant and wanted to think more about it.A few weeks later, while cooking steaks on the grill, he was ready to talk. It was June in Alabama and the early evening heat was oppressive. Sitting next to the hot grill, breathing was difficult. So, father and son enjoyed a beer to counter the heat and facilitate the somewhat uneasy conversation.Dad, what do you think about the idea of opening a brewery? Not at all what I expected. Neither of us had ever brewed beer, let alone pondered opening a brewery. My immediate inclination was to resist this idea. Silently, I wondered how many years to launch a brewery and really preferring he start a career now. Sweat began beading more freely. However, to steady myself and continue this talk about his dreams, we each opened another beer.Today, after all the training, education, and experience, OddStory Brewing Company has been the culmination of that discussion in June 2013. I must admit, his thoughtful approach was right. And yes, drinking a beer helped launch our story and successfully turn the page on my scribbled notes.
