ABOUT BRUCE RUNYAN

Thank you for visiting my LinkedIn page. The first thing you should know about me is that I have been fortunate to work with some outstanding students over the years – students who are both outstanding as scholars and as people who do good in the world. I am grateful in the extreme for the opportunity to craft learning experiences to help my students be successful professionally and in life.My primary interest is financial accounting. This is motivated by my desire to understand value – what are companies, goods, time, intangibles, tangibles, or people worth? How do you maximize the value of your life? The theory and evolution of finance and financial accounting are fascinating and inform valuation. My secondary area is cost and managerial accounting. This is an acquired taste since this subdiscipline is primarily microeconomics with a dash of psychology and a pinch of accounting systems. My breakthrough moment in cost and managerial accounting came when I realized that of all areas of accounting – audit, tax, systems, cost, and financial – none of the accounting areas created more value in the world than cost and managerial accounting. If you want to create value, cost and managerial accounting will give you insights into how to do it.Currently, I spend a significant amount of time upskilling in accounting technology. I learn something new daily. The accounting profession demands that students entering the workforce have tech skills. I am intrigued by the inelegant phrase coined by the AACSB, “technology agility.” Technology agility is an essential skill for accounting graduates and is “the ability to quickly and smoothly adapt to or integrate current technologies with newer, different, disruptive, expansive or convergent technologies.” I fully committed to this area when I opened Alteryx, noted their catchphrase, “The Thrill of Solving” and thought, “You know – that’s right.”I am interested in linking with students, former students, academicians interested in finding better ways to teach and learn, practicing financial professionals who would like to share the current state of practice, or anyone who might have a position (e.g, internship, full-time employment) or learning experience for accounting students.Top 10 Clifton Strengths: 1. Learner 2. Ideation 3. Connectedness 4. Intellection 5. Strategic 6. Relator 7. Responsibility 8. Belief 9. Achiever 10. Input. See for insight into the meaning of these strengths.
