ABOUT BRUCE BALLON M.D. ESP FRCP
Dr. Bruce Ballon is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry and Public Health at the University of Toronto and an Adjunct Professor in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Ontario Tech University. He is a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, with subspecialty fellowships in Addiction Psychiatry and Youth & Family Psychiatry, and advanced expertise in trauma and stress related disorders.Dr. Ballon currently serves as Medical Director of Complex Mental Health for Partners in Canadian Veterans Rehabilitation Services (PCVRS), providing leadership in the care of veterans with highly complex mental health, trauma, and concurrent conditions. He is also Medical Director for both the Nurse’s Health Program of Ontario and the Ontario College of Pharmacy Health Program.Dr. Ballon is also the National Executive Advisor for EHN Canada, where he is contributing to program development for helping those with addiction and mental health issues.He is a Senior Clinician Educator at both CAMH and Mount Sinai Hospital. At CAMH, Dr. Ballon was the founder of the Youth Addiction and Concurrent Disorders Program, as well as the Advanced Clinical and Educational Services, and Problem Gambling, Gaming, and Internet Use Services. In addition he is also a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist at Baycrest, where he has contributed to the development of simulation-based experiential training programs.Previously, Dr. Ballon served as a Senior Consultant Psychiatrist with Homewood Health, supporting specialty clinics and residential treatment programs nationwide. As Director of Education for Simulation Canada, Dr. Ballon championed a collaborative, interprofessional approach to education, developing national programs and mentoring the next generation of simulation educators. His work included building strategic partnerships with the Canadian Armed Forces, paramedic and police services, and multiple healthcare disciplines.Dr. Ballon is a trusted consultant to numerous healthcare and professional organizations on addiction and mental health, including the Ontario Medical Association (OMA) and the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC). He has designed and led numerous innovative clinical treatment models addressing complex intersections of trauma, mental illness, and addiction, earning multiple peer- and system-level awards, including the Canadian Psychiatric Association’s national C.A. Roberts Award for Clinical Leadership.
