HOW A GIANT CASE OF WRITER’S BLOCK TURNED INTO A NEW YORK ART GALLERYFifteen years ago I was an award-wining advertising creative director, when my novel, The Karma Charmer, was published in three languages and optioned for a film by Dustin Hoffman. I was working on a follow-up in a large writing loft and it wasn’t going well, when I went for a walk, saw an abstract painting I liked and bought it on a whim.Always an art lover, but terrified to buy it, I hit the web to research it and discovered that the world of art, previously cloaked and hidden to the outsider, had just been made infinitely more transparent to the uninitiated by internet databases such as Artnet.com. Soon my novel was shoved to the side of my desk, narrow, flat boxes began showing up at my door, and my life had changed forever. Soaking up knowledge wherever I could find it—framers, restorers, dealers, auctioneers, art historians and courses at MOMA, I acquired an education.Now I’ve been a dealer for almost 15 years, selling 20th Century art by appointment from my Riverside Drive apartment, and through “Bruce Palmer Galleries on Artnet.com, Askart.com and Facebook as well as the 3rd. floor art wall at The Showplace on 40 West 25th Street, which has become a go-to source for some of New York’s finest designers.The adventure continues to grow both in scope and quality with the recent addition of my “Bruce Palmer Galleries” on Facebook, which allows me to present a fuller selection of my ever-evolving inventory. Ooops! I’ve been having so much fun, I forgot to write that novel!
