About Emir B.

BROWN: a distinguished Honduran-American educator and artist from the village of Harlem, New York.They are the recipient of multiple honors in poetry, including the 2020 Frost Place Latinx Scholarship, the 2017 Emory University Artistine Mann Award in Poetry, and Emory\'s 2020 Excellence in LGBTQ+ Writing Award. Brown is the author of three books. Their work has been featured in Spires Magazine, Sunday Morning at the River\'s African anthology,\"A Womb With a Heart,\" and Z Publishing House\'s \"Georgia\'s Best Emerging Poets\" anthology. Brown attended kindergarten through 6th grade at P.S. 200, The James McCune Smith School, where they were part of the final cohort before the school discontinued its 6th-grade class. They continued their education at Democracy Prep Charter School, joining the school\'s third graduating cohort and completing grades 7–12.In 2012, Brown became a fellow of The Opportunity Network. Through this program, Brown was selected to represent New York City at the inaugural White House Beating the Odds Summit in 2014, where they performed an original poem before national education leaders and briefly encountered President Barack Obama.After graduating from Democracy Prep in 2015, Brown began their collegiate journey at Emory University, where they co-founded Free Thought Poetry and later served as president of the Media, Literature, and Arts Outreach House (MLAO). Brown earned their BA in Comparative Literature in 2021. Their capstone research project on mixed race theory was accepted for presentation at the Johns Hopkins Humanities Research Symposium before the event was cancelled due to COVID-19. Brown is currently pursuing graduate studies in General and Special Education at Bank Street College of Education.In 2023, Brown began teaching 5th Grade English Language Arts at Uncommon Canarsie Middle School, where they led their students to finish first in the network on the 6th grade state ELA exam. As an Educational Specialist with Roads to Success, they now oversee 13 instructors across three program sites, supporting high-quality instruction and youth development for 200–300 students each week. Brown joined St. Matthews Baptist Church in 2022 as a livestream operator and now serves as its Senior Broadcast Technician, helping modernize and expand the digital footprint of one of Harlem’s historic Black churches.They also volunteer as a youth soccer coach with South Bronx United, recently completing the U-12 Spring 2025 season in 4th place with a record of 3 wins and 7 losses.
