While taking classes at Sacramento City College, I started a part-time, on-campus role as a Writing Center Instructional Assistant. This role focuses on tutoring undergraduate students in skills needed to complete their assignments, along with other responsibilities. Students range in age from teens, including High School Dual-Enrolment students, right through to retirement age. Tutoring students in- Pre-writing tasks, such as idea generation and outlining- research skills- citation (MLA, APA, Chicago)- essay structures- grammar and sentence structures, including signal vocabulary- paragraphing- myriad other small questions and skills. Other duties include- Data and report generation- running English Conversation Hours for ESL students- outreach to students, faculty and staff- collaboration with faculty (including those who request workshops for their classes)- guiding Student Tutors- communications and marketing.
