About Brittni Howard
My research interests include applied anthropology and global health. I am committed to global health equity and social justice. I have an informed interest in the field of applied and critical medical anthropology, critical service learning, photovoice, structural violence, and public health. I have 15 years experience working alongside community organizers, political activists, and applied researchers. I was a rehabilitation aid/life coach for numerous clients in Montana. The clients that I worked with lived below the poverty line, and suffered from mental and physical impairments. I accompanied my clients to doctors appointments, community services, social services, and assisted clients in their homes. I also worked as a service learning community-based participatory researcher with the Apsaalooke in Montana. The work that I assisted with on the Apsaalooke reservation included addressing traditional and contemporary food-ways while addressing current health disparities. I also assessed and worked on a community garden on the reservation. I have experience working in South Africa. While I was living in South Africa I worked as a community-based participatory researcher at the Bergzicht Training Centre in Stellenbosch. I worked with community members living in the local townships to teach health and living skills, work skills, and provided an assessment to the Centre. While I was in South Africa, I also worked in Kayamandi Township with school children. My duties included tutoring grade-school children, engaging in physical games and exercise, and guiding students to formulate a school newspaper. I was the community coordinator for PIH | Engage in Flagstaff, Arizona. I was the first PIH community coordinator in Flagstaff. I coordinated fundraising, advocacy, and educational initiatives in the Flagstaff and Northern Arizona University communities.
