ABOUT BRITT BATES

I am a labour and employment lawyer in Hicks Morley’s Toronto office. I advise and represent both private and public sector employers on a wide range of labour, employment, and human rights matters. I summered and articled at Hicks Morley before returning as an associate. Prior to joining the firm, I gained valuable labour relations experience acting as the lead research associate for interest arbitration and central collective bargaining negotiations in the long-term care and home care sectors. This experience has shaped my practical and client-focused approach to my advice and representation. I received my Juris Doctor from Western University where I graduated on the Dean’s List. During law school, I held the positions of Co-Chair of the Community Outreach Committee, Co-President of the Labour and Employment Law Society, and Program Manager of the Sport Solution Clinic, where I advocated for Olympic and national-level athletes in resolving sport-related issues, including safe sport matters. I received various academic awards during my studies including the Law Society of Ontario Prize for graduating in the top 15 students of my class, and the J.S.D. Tory Writing Prize for my paper titled “Improving Labour Arbitration in Canada to Address Sexual Misconduct in the Workplace through the Use of Criminal Law Rules and Concepts”. Prior to law school, I obtained my Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Labour Studies from McMaster University, and my Master of Industrial Relations from Queen’s University. Outside of my practice, I enjoy reading, long-distance running, and spending time with my family and dog.
