About Brien Stonebreaker
I am an attorney, veteran, and public servant with two decades of experience in military healthcare, federal law, and public policy. My career reflects a consistent commitment to service, with a more recent emphasis on using the law to promote fairness, accountability, and equity across trade, health, and civil rights.Currently, I serve as a Staff Attorney with the U.S. Department of Commerce, Office of the Chief Counsel for Trade Enforcement and Compliance. In this role, I advise on statutory interpretation, regulatory enforcement, and international trade litigation. I collaborate with the Department of Justice on antidumping and countervailing duty cases, helping ensure that trade laws are applied fairly and effectively to protect U.S. industries and uphold the integrity of international commerce. My interests also extend to health law and civil rights. At the Public Health Law Center, I supported a project analyzing how local, state, and federal laws affect broadband access as a determinant of health. I identified key legal and equity implications of access barriers and assessed how preemption impacts local authority. This experience deepened my belief that law can and should advance health equity, social justice, and community empowerment. Before becoming an attorney, I served 15 years in the U.S. Army, leading medical and administrative teams and managing healthcare operations for more than beneficiaries. Working in fast-paced, dynamic environments taught me how to lead diverse teams, adapt to complex challenges, and deliver results with integrity and purpose.Across my work in government, health policy, and military leadership, my goal remains the same: to strengthen systems that protect people and to help build a more just, equitable, and resilient society.
