As one of the teachers for the Toddler Learning Class (TLC) at the Knoxville campus of Tennesee Schools for the Deaf, I work with Deaf and hard-of-hearing children ages 6 months to 3 years old and their families, focusing on one essential philosophy: young children need language, language, language! Early parental involvement is key. My role is to empower, support, and encourage families so their children have multiple opportunities for communication and success.I co-lead classes twice a week where parents attend with their child to learn how to “play with a purpose.” Each session follows the Tennessee Early Learning Development Standards (TN ELDS) and incorporates both American Sign Language (ASL) and printed English. Alongside a Bilingual Speech-Language Pathologist, we conduct activities that promote fine motor, gross motor, social-emotional, expressive, and receptive language skills.I also provide families with monthly educational opportunities on topics such as ASL classifiers, sensory integration, the IEP process, the Shared Reading Project, and more — giving parents the tools and strategies they need to support their child’s growth at home and in the community.

ABOUT BRIELLA DIAZ
With approximately a decade of experience empowering deaf children and youth across the United States, I am deeply committed to ensuring their access to quality education within a bilingual framework. As a staunch advocate for deaf rights and culture, I steadfastly work towards ensuring families are equipped with knowledge about the diverse opportunities available for their children.Currently, I lead a dynamic team of 40+ contracted professionals and oversee the operations of a statewide Outreach program catering to families and children who are deaf, deafblind, hard of hearing, and deaf plus. I am also a certified Deaf Mentor and a certified Parent Advisor, where I work directly with families, coaching them to incorporate accessible language within their natural environments and daily routines. As you can tell, I am passionate about creating a better world for deaf individuals (regardless of their age) and their families.
